Drogba to Inter Milan?

Ahead of tonight's Chelsea away match with Bordeaux, I was not really shocked to find out that our very own problematic star DIDI DROGBA held a meeting in a posh Italian restaurant in England with Inter's vice president Marco Branca. Also present at the dinner was the special one's agent Jorge Mendes.

Didi Drogba never fails to make the news headline whether he's playing on the field or not! I personally think that its time to let the Ivorian Hitman go since he did less for the team with his antics and injury problem. BIGUPS to Didi for what he did for Chelsea and I can never take that away from him. A true big game player with full of confidence with an ability to destroy any defence and a defender's nightmare. BUT all that is in the past and if its true he's going out, I wish him all the best but if he decides to stay, go on and prove your worth in the 2nd half of the season!

Chelsea 0 - 0 Newcastle

A-WELL-ah~! Not the result that I had expected. I'm a bit frustrated that Chelsea couldn't score but Shay Given was tremendous! Big ups to Joe Kinnear and his boys for getting the draw they wanted and they got it.

Chelsea controlled 70% of the game and they had 33 shots with 9 on goal but none went in. While Newcastle only managed to shoot 2 times with none on goal. That is just how strong our back line is. As for our attacking forwards, it is safe for me to say that we had missed Drogba who in my opinion could change the game the minute he steps in the field! Anelka was good but he had no luck last night.

Anyway, other results included Liverpooh draw, Manure draw, Gooners lost! Others are not important! :D So that means we're still NUMBER ONE BAYBEH!

Up the blues..

Chelsea vs Newcastle PREVIEW

I'M NUMBER ONE!
Newcastle has never won against Chelsea in 22 years and tonight will be no different too. No disrespect to Joe Kinnear and his men but I honestly believe that we are too strong for them. Although I do admire Shola Ameobi and Obafemi Martins because of their strong physical presence and their attacking ability but I'm sure its not enough to shake up KING JOHN TERRY and the rest of Chelsea defenders.

Chelsea line-up, I'm going for:
1.Petr Cech
2.John Terry
3.Ivanovic
4.Bosingwa
5.Bridge
6.Deco
7.Mikel
8.Lampard
9.Malouda
10.J.Cole
11.Nicolas Anelka

The Man to watch:

Who else? The man on form: Nicolas Anelka!! :P

Score Prediction:

I saw ESPN's Football Forecast and what they predicted was a Chelsea win with 2 or 3 goals to none. Well I'm going big on this one, another 5-0 win for the Blues with Nicolas Anelka scoring a hat-trick! (If Im right, then I should be a football pundit!) :D

Tonight the match starts at 11pm! Live on Starsports! Don't miss it!

Drogba has become a liability..

Didier Drogba`s 3 match suspension was inevitable once he`d pleaded guilty. Perhaps it was his guilty plea which saved him a fourth game in the stands, as the sanction for throwing a coin back into the crowd could have been augmented as Drogba flipped the Burnley fans the bird.

Lest we forget, the game in question was Didier`s comeback after an injury. That injury, sustained earlier this season at Cluj, aggravated his recovery … from another knee injury, on which Drogba was operated over the summer break. That operation took place shortly after the Champions League final in Moscow. Lest we forget, during that final, Didier Drogba was shown a straight red card for slapping Manchester United`s Nemanja Vidic.

We`ll pass on the 'outrage` that welcomed how the man talked about this in his autobiography, when he declared that, had he known he was going to get a red card, he would have punched Vidic in the face. However, let us point out that those words were subject to an inquiry. Drogba was not punished for what was surely meant to be a tongue in cheek remark.

Arguably that particular red card cost Chelsea the game. With Drogba off for a completely avoidable red card minutes before the final whistle, Avram Grant had to rearrange the order of the penalty shoot-out takers. Since Anelka was unhappy at going early, John Terry stepped in. The rest is a history that we are still trying to get over.

So let us present a timeline of Drogba`s involvement at Chelsea these last few months. In May, the guy gets sent off in the Champions League final, which is already a disgrace. He played a key role in losing the biggest game in Chelsea`s history. Contrite? No. He starts mouthing off about moving away from Chelsea, flirting with José Mourinho at Inter, not to mention Real Madrid and AC Milan. He also declares that the collection by Marseille supporters to bring him back to the club which propelled him to the spotlights, was 'pathetic`. Presumably the proud and historical French club isn`t big enough for his ego.

In the meantime, Drogba is operated on the knees. He`s off the field for months. Over the summer, unfortunately, no big clubs come in for him. Change of heart, he declares that, actually, he wants to stay at Chelsea. It`s astonishing how the absence of any big-name suitors helps Drogba find his loyalty. As the transfer window slams shut, he is busy with his return to fitness, but somehow finds the time and the effort to publish his autobiography. Actually it`s a new edition of his existing autobiography during which he 'spills the beans` on that Champions League game. What a moment, the Chelsea fans will be queuing around the block for that book.

On his first start of the season, the Champions League game at Cluj, he succumbs to another injury, suffering a relapse that will keep him off the pitch for a good 6 weeks. His return is the fateful game against Burnley.

We are detecting a pattern here, which is that Drogba has become a serious liability for Chelsea. After all, we can also mention some other big games when Drogba`s lack of discipline and self control has costed Chelsea dearly. In September last year, he was sent off in a Premier League match against Fulham. And in February 2005, he was sent off for two yellow cards against Barcelona at the Nou Camp, a game that Chelsea eventually lost. They were winning when he left the pitch.

Of course, we can also cite games when he has been absolutely unplayable. When Chelsea won 1-4 at Liverpool, although Drogba didn`t score, he was the architect of Liverpool`s humbling. Last season, when Chelsea beat Liverpool in the Champions League semi-final, it was Drogba also who put them to the sword. But he also courted controversy by celebrating one of his goals sliding in front of the Liverpool fans. The two goals he scored against Arsenal at The Bridge were a crucial moment last season. We can also remember how his goal against Arsenal in the Carling Cup final were the icing on the cake of a performance that Drogba bossed.

But just as Drogba had one outstanding Chelsea season, when he scored 33 goals during 2006-2007, he`s also had a few mediocre ones. One can try to find mitigating circumstances in the fact that he`s often injured. That adds 'injury-prone` to the problems with the player.

Drogba`s injuries, however, are not entirely his fault, they certainly are not the main problem, which is his lack of discipline. The frequent reds are hardly compensated by a glut of goals, nor is the smell of diving that surrounds the player, and for which he has earned a terrible reputation. Let`s just say that that reputation is not entirely undeserved. We can add to that the fact that the guy is very outspoken, to the extent that he is a disruptive influence on the dressing room. Last season he went on and on about José Mourinho`s departure, and never missed the opportunity to badmouth Chelsea Football Club, his employers. One would think that the £90,000 per week that the same Chelsea FC pay him might earn a modicum of loyalty. Apparently not, they don`t earn the club the right not to be insulted by their own employee. One would also think that a player who is a highly intelligent man would understand that throwing a coin back into the crowd was a pretty stupid idea for which he would get into trouble.

And now we have got to the stage where the player goes from red card to injury to another injury to a red card over 6 months, with one goal scored in the process. He`ll be out for another 3 weeks now.

Can Chelsea afford to have such a liability on their books, or should they try to offload as soon as possible?

Drogba faces a THREE match ban.

DIDIER DROGBA has admitted an FA charge of violent conduct for throwing a coin at Burnley fans.

The 30-year-old reacted angrily when he was subjected to a torrent of abuse after opening the scoring for Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

Phil Scolari's side were eventually dumped out of the Carling Cup on penalties and Drogba immediately apologised for his moment of madness.

But the Blues striker is likely to be handed a three-match ban when the FA regulatory commission meets tomorrow.

A statement from Chelsea confirmed: "Didier Drogba has responded to the FA's charge of violent conduct and will not contest it."

The other Michael, Michael Mancienne!

After being called into the England squad, Michael Mancienne is naturally, as all footballers are in such circumstances, over-the-moon.

The Sun newspaper had widely tipped Mancienne as a surprise inclusion on Saturday morning and when it came to fruition Michael was eager to explain his feelings remarking,

"It is a great honour and a dream come true."

"It is the dream of every boy to play for their country and it is fantastic to be in the squad."

"I was focussed on being in the U21 squad so this was great news."

"Just being around the squad will be superb."

Our congratulations go to Michael on achieving the first part of a dream, here`s hoping he gets the opportunity to shine in Berlin.

Nicolas Anelka is our #1 Striker!

Luiz Felipe Scolari sets the record straight, or does he?

As the nation gets ready to greet the inevitable announcement, by the FA, that Didier Drogba will be tarred and feathered (because the public naturally gets what they want) for his despicable behaviour on Wednesday evening; Nicolas Anelka continues to go from strength to strength.

Another excellent brace of goals have cemented his place at the top of the scoring charts in the Premier League and he remains the man firmly in possession of the centre forward shirt.

His performances in the last three games would suggest that Anelka has finally got to grips with life at Stamford Bridge and is comfortable in his surroundings. Luiz Felipe Scolari certainly thinks so and has, after the match, spoken out about how highly he rates Anelka, remarking,

"Is he our number one striker? Yes, because he has played every game."

"He is more confident and he is a player who operates not only inside the area but can receive the ball outside it and work quickly. Mow with this confidence he arrives more times in front of goal and he is scoring more."

Moving on to discuss the imminent return of Drogba, post tar and feathering, Scolari continued,

"Of course he and Didier can play together, once we have time to work with them on the training ground."

That`s quite possibly true Mr Scolari but we beg you not to shove Anelka out wide where he`ll be wasted.

With Liverpool and Manchester United having won (and Arsenal surprisingly lost), the visit to West Brom took on new significance this evening.

Chelsea knew that three points was a must if they wanted to leap above Liverpool in the table and keep the challenges of Manchester United and Arsenal at bay.

And that is exactly what they did with another emphatic score-line.

Team News - With Petr Cech having aggravated a muscle problem Carlo Cudicini was given the keepers jersey. Elsewhere there were recalls for Jose Bosingwa, Nicolas Anelka, John Terry, Frank Lampard and John Mikel Obi all of whom didn`t make the starting eleven for the Carling Cup defeat at the hands of Burnley in midweek.

On the bench was a host of talent including bad-by Didier Drogba and returning from injury Ashley Cole and Michael Ballack.

First Half - The first half saw Chelsea go into the break with a three goal lead but for the first thirty minutes, if you were honest, it was hard to differentiate between the sides.

Albion played with a vigour that belied their status as the bottom team in the Premier League whilst Chelsea resembled a boxer who was perhaps sizing the opponent up before striking.

In that first thirty minutes, too many passes went astray and too many attempts on goal were lacklustre and wayward. But, in the 34th minute that all changed.

Jose Bosingwa, keen to get forward as ever, crashed home a glorious strike from just outside the box and the goal seemed to knock the stuffing out of Albion.

Four minutes later Anelka made it 2-0 with a neat finish from just inside the box, after a defensive error and in injury time he slotted one past Carson for his second of the game.

At 3-0 there looked to be no way back for Albion especially considering that Chelsea had only let in that goal from Robinho away from home all season and had yet to concede a goal in the second half in any Premier League fixture.

Also, that record of ten successive Premier League victories looked to be ours for the taking.

Second Half - Three goals down the second half was always going to be a damage limitation exercise for the home side and Chelsea, but for some woeful finishing, could (and should) have doubled their tally for the night.

Anelka, chasing a hat-trick, saw opportunities go begging whilst Malouda and Kalou seemed to have left their shooting boots at home. With the half drawing to an inevitable conclusion Scolari made a few changes with Ballack coming on for Kalou, Drogba for Anelka and Ferreira for Terry.

Worryingly, for both Chelsea and England, Terry looked to have picked up a foot injury as he hobbled off.

Three more points in the bag, a mixed performance but two more records on the way.

Chelsea have now won 10 Premier League away games on the trot, a record and have now started a Premier League season with the most away wins on the trot.

Not a bad return for a rainy night in the West Midlands.

Chelsea Team - Cudicini, Bosingwa, Ivanovic, Terry (Ferreira - 85), Bridge, Mikel, Lampard, Deco, Kalou (Ballack - 68), Anelka (Drogba - 74), Malouda

Unused Subs - Hilario, A.Cole, Mineiro, Sinclair,

Chelsea Scorers - Bosingwa, Anelka (2),

Chelsea Yellow Cards - Terry, Bosingwa, Ivanovic

Chelsea Red Cards - Nil

Congratulations Burnley!

In the aftermath of our Carling Cup exit to Burnley, proved to be an interesting experience.

Sat in front of the PC, still slightly bewildered at us having gone out of a cup competition on yet another penalty shoot-out, I watched the chatbox from other clubs came across to gloat.

Messages were left chiding us for a number of reasons amongst them being,

- Our inability to beat lower league opposition!

- Questioning who we`d get in the quarter-final draw (very droll)!

- Laughing at the demise of our hopes for a quadruple!

They just kept rolling in and extending the numerous threads available on our site.

I could have got a few kicks by replying to then but I wasn`t in the mood and some twelve hours later I`m still not.

However I would like to make one thing clear.

In the aftermath of our exit I`d like to wish Burnley Football Club good luck in their quest to achieve both promotion and glory in the Carling Cup, do yourselves proud and go all the way.

And as for those who came baiting last night, perhaps a reminder of that old saying - 'he who laughs last laughs longest` - might suffice for now!

PREVIEW: Chelsea vs Burnley

Chelsea resume their participation in the Carling Cup this Wednesday evening with a home tie against Championship side Burnley.

It promises to be an enthralling encounter with a packed Stamford Bridge, courtesy of reduced ticket prices for domestic cup competitions, with 6,000 opposition fans journeying south to follow their team.

The Carling Cup ahs been a good competition for Chelsea in recent years and Luiz Felipe Scolari will be keen to emulate his predecessors, Mourinho and Grant, who both reached Carling Cup Final, with differing results, in their first season in charge.

The biggest challenge currently facing Scolari though will relate to his team selection. Normally, the Carling Cup is seen as a competition whereby legs can be rested and a few fringe players and youngsters given a run out.

Sadly, because of our injury crisis, Scolari maybe doesn`t have that luxury, whilst he would no doubt like to rest certain players the threadbare nature of his squad would indicate that the team could seriously suffer as a result.

Despite the fact that the media are reporting that Michael Ballack, Ashley Cole, Joe Cole, Didier Drogba and Ricardo Carvalho are all tipped to return sometime this week, we`d be surprised if it were against Burnley.

However, Scolari has a reputation for entrusting youth and the likes of Stoch, Sinclair and Di Santo will be itching to be given a chance to shine.

My suspicions are that the starting eleven will be a little strange compared to recent weeks and may look something like this,

Cudicini, Ferreira, Ivanovic, Terry, Bridge, Belletti, Lampard, Deco, Kalou, Di Santo and Sinclair.

Whether that`ll be strong enough to overcome a Burnley side looking to pull off a shock remains to be seen but we`re fairly certain that there will be some star names on the bench just in case matters do not go according to plan, the likes of J.Cole, A.Cole, Drogba and Ballack.

So what do we know about Burnley!

They currently sit in a healthy fifth position in the Championship with twenty-six points from sixteen games. Managed by Owen Coyle they went down 2-0 to a Wolverhampton Wanderers side containing Michael Mancienne this weekend, in a game whereby they received six yellow cards and one red card.

The red card will mean that Clarke Carlisle will miss the trip to Stamford Bridge whilst their striker, Steve Thompson, is cup tied. Michael Duff is expected to replace the suspended Carlisle.

Owen Coyle will also be hoping that Steven Caldwell and Stephen Jordan shake off injuries to play.

Whatever happens, it promises to be a thrilling night and if it is as half as competitive as the tie with Leicester City last year, where Lampard rode to our rescue, it`ll be a right humdinger.

Michael Ballack News!

After taking time out to have a foot problem corrected with a minor operation, Michael Ballack has now returned to training.

The German international, who got involved in a spat with his national manager during his rehabilitation following the operation, will give Liz Felipe Scolari another option when his fitness is confirmed.

We doubt very much whether he`ll be available for the intriguing Carling Cup clash with Burnley on Wednesday night but he may be ready for a place on the bench on Saturday as we go chasing a record 10 Premier League away wins on the trot in a fixture with West Bromwich Albion.

Thierry Henry?

With Chelsea set to scour the bargain buckets this January with the board, apparently, restricting the cash available as the credit crunch bites, an interesting potential target has emerged.

Last week, the suggestion was that the club might target Michael Owen, well today the suggestion, published in a tabloid, is that Luiz Felipe Scolari could be looking towards the Catalan city of Barcelona to ease his striking crisis with a bid for former Arsenal legend, Thierry Henry.

The article states that the fee would be in the region of £5 million and would give Henry the escape route back to London and the Premier League that he apparently craves.

Would Henry be a good buy?

Your thoughts please!

Blackburn Rovers 0 - 2 Chelsea

Chelsea travelled to Ewood Park eager to blow away the memories of that night in Rome last Tuesday. The fixture, against Blackburn, also gave Chelsea the ideal opportunity to return to the top of the Premier League.

And that is exactly what they did with a decent performance on a drenched Ewood Park pitch.

Team News - The starting eleven was very much the same as that which had underperformed against AS Roma. The only change being the introduction of Salomon Kalou in place of Joe Cole. Interestingly, there was also no sign of Joe on the bench suggesting he`d picked up a knock prior to the game.

Prior to the game it had also been suggested that Mineiro and Drogba would start. As it turned out Mineiro was on the bench whilst Drogba, like Cole was conspicuous by his absence.

For the opposition Santa Cruz didn`t recover from his knock and Paul Ince selected ex-Chelsea schoolboy, Jason Roberts, as his sole striker.

First Half - After a minutes silence in honour of Remembrance Sunday it was Blackburn who got the action underway with Andrews firing over in their first attack.

With just five minutes on the clock Chelsea should have had a penalty. Anelka raced on to a lose ball and as he rounded Robinson he appeared to get caught and went down, inexplicably Chris Foy waved play on.

Anelka then saw his flicked header, from a Lampard free kick, turned over the bar by Robinson as the weather conditions continued to deteriorate. As Chelsea forced Blackburn back, playing some neat football, Anelka then saw Robinson save his header after he`d latched on to a great cross from Bosingwa.

The action continued in the right half of the pitch and Terry saw his header go narrowly wide. Malouda was the next to pepper the goal when he latched on to a lose ball, spun and fired wide. The same player then saw his shot deflected over the bar as it appeared only a matter of time until Chelsea opened the scoring.

However, with the rain still pouring down, puddles of water were beginning to form on the pitch and it was becoming noticeable that the ball was not running normally.

The pressure continued and Lampard saw a shot from twenty-two yards turned past the post by Robinson. Cech had to react swiftly to pull of a good save from Villanueva as Blackburn threatened. It was a rare threat though as Chelsea continued to push forward.
Robinson produced another good save as Anelka cut inside a defender and unleashed a shot, Lampard saw a shot parried away and Alex hit the wall with a solid free kick before that breakthrough finally came in the thirty-ninth minute.

It was, to be honest, a fortunate goal. Alex unleashed a shot from all of forty yards that Anelka deflected, with his thigh, past Robinson. Strangely enough, Robinson stopped and appealed for something when he could quite possibly have turned around and stopped the ball as it trickled towards the line on the water-sodden turf.

Second Half - The second half saw Blackburn start with a more positive attitude. Paul Ince swapped Derbyshire for Andrews and the home side started to create a few chances.

A Pedersen free kick, from twenty-five yards out, was expertly blocked by Terry before Roberts lost Terry with a great turn only for Cech to react smartly and smother the shot. Villaneuva then fired over from distance before Scolari took the decision to try and change events by introducing Belletti for Kalou.

Six minutes later the game was over as a contest when Anelka scored his second of the game. Lampard won the ball on the edge of the box and threaded a great ball through for Anelka to lift over the advancing Robinson.

After that goal Blackburn wilted and Anelka could have scored a third when he was played clean through down the right channel, however Robinson got a leg to his shot and the chance was gone. Before that we were treated to a majestic Lampard free kick that Robinson tipped onto the cross bar.

Chelsea, thanks to Anelka`s brace return to the top of the Premier League, on goal difference.

Chelsea - Cech, Bosingwa, Alex, Terry, Bridge, Mikel, Lampard, Deco (Ferreira - 92), Kalou (Belletti - 62), Anelka, Malouda

Unused Subs - Cudicini, Ivanovic, Mineiro, Di Santo, Sinclair

Chelsea Scorers - Anelka (2)

Chelsea Yellow Cards - Malouda

Chelsea Red Cards - Nil

PREVIEW : Blackburn Rovers vs Chelsea FC

Tuesday night was something of a reality check. Nobody really expected us to crash to such a heavy defeat and as a result of that AS Roma fixture; the eyes of the world will be on us. Therefore, in our opinion, a trip to Ewood Park is just what the doctor ordered. If there are any lingering doubts about our desire to get involved in a tough encounter then Blackburn are the team to expose them. Paul Ince`s team are capable of playing some decent football but are not afraid to mix it up and prove to be a combative outfit. If John Terry described the AS Roma defeat as the kick up the arse we might have needed then an encounter with Blackburn is just the medicine needed to cure our woes.

Vital Quotes:

It`s a little known fact that Jason Roberts, who will be leading the Blackburn attack was once on our books. His brief Chelsea career unfortunately ended when he was told at 16 that his days as a Chelsea player were over. Roberts drifted back into non-league football before clawing his way back up the ladder to Premier League level.

However, as can be expected, he is relishing the prospect of locking horns with his first club and will be looking to add to the goal he scored against us in the FA Cup semi-final a couple of years ago.

Speaking about the encounter on Sunday, Roberts had this to say,

'Chelsea, for me, are playing football as well as anyone in Europe at the moment.

'It will be a big test for us. They are a really good side with some great players. But that is what you play football for - it is what you are in the Premier League for, so you've got to look forward to these games.'

Blackburn Team News:

Paul Ince, in his first season in charge of a Premier League side, faces a few problems ahead of the fixture with Chelsea. Benni McCarthy is suspended after his recent red card whilst injuries are likely to see star striker Roque Santa Cruz sidelined. Also out are Brett Emerton whilst Vince Grella is another who may not recover in time to start after struggling with a hamstring injury.

Paul Ince will select his starting eleven from the following squad:-

Robinson, Simpson, Samba, Nelsen, Ooijer, Tugay, Warnock, Villanueva, Roberts, Fowler, Santa Cruz, Derbyshire, Pedersen, Olsson, Andrews, Brown, Khizanishvili, Treacy.

Player to watch: Robbie Fowler

Simply because I just can`t resist asking the question - Is he really still around?

Chelsea Team News:

Chelsea have travelled north without the injured Michael Essien, Ricardo Carvalho, Michael Ballack and Ashley Cole. However, Mineiro has been added to the squad and could make his full debut. However, here at Vital Chelsea we feel that if he does, at the expense of Mikel, then the Nigerian can feel pretty hard done by. Also in the frame to play is Didier Drogba as Luiz Felipe Scolari seeks to restore some power to the attack.

Here at Vital Chelsea we expect the boss to name the following starting eleven:-

Cech, Bosingwa, Terry, Alex, Bridge, Mikel, Lampard, Deco, J.Cole, Drogba, Malouda

Player to watch: All Eleven!

It`s hard to pick a single player this week. The defeat in the Olympic Stadium has seen the media focus on the side collectively. Therefore, for a one off we`re going to suggest Sunday is a time for the team to perform, for eleven individuals to put in the sort of collective performance that will indicate Tuesday was a one-off.

Match Facts & Stats

Chelsea`s record against Blackburn is remarkably good. In six meetings, over the last two seasons, we`re undefeated with Blackburn having only scored once.

In our last eight visits to Ewood Park we`ve lost only once. Overall, the record books, for fixtures between the two sides at Ewood Park is as follows,

Premier League games - Blackburn 6 wins, Chelsea 6 wins, Draws 2

In all League games - Blackburn 20 wins, Chelsea 13 wins, Draws 14

Ref Watch:

Chris Foy of St Helens will be the man in the middle.

Match Prediction:

Ewood Park is normally a happy hunting ground for Chelsea, defeats are rare and memories of some fascinating encounters are still fresh in the mind. If I had to pick just two I`d got for the thrilling 4-3 victory of the late nineties where Tore Andre Flo came on to score two late goals and that thrilling encounter when a solitary Arjen Robben strike gave us a win on a night the players chucked their shirts into the crowd, on a raw night, signalling that the possibility of winning the title was becoming a probability. On Sunday we`ll need more of that same attitude and I can see it happening with Chelsea storming to a 3-1 win.

Next Fixtures:

It`s time for a change in midweek with a Carling Cup clash with Championship side, Burnley. Next weekend we travel to the Hawthorns to take on West Bromwich Albion.

Chelsea vs Sunderland (preview)

After a rousing and very welcome 3-0 away win at form-team Hull City, we welcome Roy Keane and his hard working side to the Bridge for yet another league battle.

Vital Quotes:

We had to work hard to defeat Phil Brown's shock troops midweek and will have to work just as hard tomorrow to break down a resolute Sunderland defence.

Chelsea Team News:

Chelsea welcome back Joe Cole after limping off against Hull and he may start, although a substitute's role seems more likely. To everyone's amazement, Didier Drogba is set for an outing on the bench as he recovers from his injury, whilst Ricardo Carvalho misses out at the back. Alex will step in. We expect Chelsea to line up as Cech, Bosingwa, Terry, Alex, A Cole, Malouda, Deco, Lampard, Mikel, Kalou and Anelka. The bench will probably be Cudicini, Ivanovic, J Cole, Drogba, Di Santo, Belletti and Bridge.

Player to watch: Frank Lampard

Frank Lampard - absolutely imperious against Hull after a disappointing outing against Liverpool. In fine form and will be looking to stamp his authority on a solid looking Sunderland midfield right from the off.

Sunderland Team News:

Big threat Kenwynne Jones is fit again and start at the Bridge. Gordon is out so Fulop continues in goal, whilst Bardsley has recovered from a dead leg and will play. Chimbinda, Tainio and Nosworthy are pushing for a recall. Team (from): Gordon, Fulop, Colgan, Bardsley, Chimbonda, Ferdinand, Nosworthy, Collins, McCartney, Malbranque, Whitehead, Tainio, Leadbitter, Miller, Yorke, Richardson, Reid, Diouf, Jones, Cisse, Chopra, Murphy, Healy, Waghorn.

Player to watch: Kenwynne Jones

It goes without saying that Sunderland's main threat is Kenwynne Jones. The big guy has pace to burn, is a huge threat in the air and can hold the ball up, although he is at his most dangerous with the ball at his feet. He must be watched closely tomorrow and again in January when hopefully we'll buy him. Class player.

Match Facts

Games against Sunderland are either easy hammerings or tight draws. We have a terrible record up at theirs, and its probably not unfair to suggest that their record at ours is equally bad. Some memorable hidings have been dished out over the years, but they look an altogether different proposition to the flimsy outfit under Peter Reid, and Keane has them playing good football but remaining hard to beat. This will not be easy.

Ref Watch:

Whoever it is, he cant be as big of a tool as Howard Webb who gave us precisely four-fifths of Feck-all at home to the Golden Scousers. Or can he? Whoever it is, can he please let the game flow and not blow for every tackle please? Is that too much to ask?

Match Prediction:

My heart recalls some joyous hammerings in the past, with 4-0 coming to mind a couple of times, plus that wonderful 6-2 battering in the Zola days. My head says this will be nothing like as easy. They will keep it tight, defend deeply and try to get it out wide as often as possible to push our fullbacks back. Much depends on how much room they give Deco and Lampard. If they close things up like Liverpool did then we will be in for a hard afternoon, but if they defend too deeply then we are very capable to imposing ourselves on them. I'll go for a 1-0 win. Ashley Cole is due one, so i'll go for him as scorer. All we ask is that we dont get any more injuries!!

Next Game:

Roma Away - potentially tricky tie in Rome not as pressured as it might be. We can afford to go there and lose, but we wont. With our style suited to playing away from home i think it will be a more open game than the one at the Bridge. Should be a cracker.

Chelsea Injury News!

With Chelsea supporters still coming to terms with the fact that Ricardo Carvalho will be out, with his hamstring, for a minimum of four weeks, there was some good news on the injury front.

At the pre-match press conference, held today, Luiz Felipe Scolari informed those in attendance that Joe Cole, although not 100% fit, is available for selection.

Also, Didier Drogba, who has been unavailable since picking up an injury in the Champions League fixture against Cluj, will be on the bench.

Like Mr Scolari said - one comes back and one goes!
